5th Grade Science

This year we will be using the CSCOPE curriculum adopted by our district. This is based on the scientific process which promotes in depth, hands on learning. Your child will be actively exploring and learning new concepts, vocabulary and processes throughout the year.

We will be focusing on the 5 E's of learning which are engage, explore, explain, evaluate andelaborate. This style of teaching and learning is a successful research based approach.

Because the skills presented in class are hands on it is essential that your child be here every possible day. Short quizzes will be given every week or so to assess student mastery of skills presented in class. Make-up quizzes will be given as needed. Our science textbook will also be included in lessons when it is needed.

GRADING:
On the days we do a lab, a participation grade will be given. If a student does not follow safety or classroom rules, they will be removed from the lab. In addition there will be several quizzes each six weeks and a unit test at the end of each unit.
